Snow, but no Snow Day

This is what our playground looks like this morning. 
I know there are students who wish it was a snow day, but we are in session on time today.

Silence for Connecticut

Snow

I know that in some places snow fell quite awhile ago.  In the Pacific Northwest, there is snow in the Cascades already.  Here in the lowlands by the Puget Sound, we don't get that much snow.

Yesterday, I saw definite flakes on my windshield, but they melted right away.

Spring...Finally

Although we reached the first day of spring this week, our area continued to have some snow.  It didn't usually stick.  The last couple of days we have had more sunshine. 

Thank you to the classes who participated with us.  We hope to see you again next year.

Our Conclusion

The groundhog predicted that we would have six more weeks of winter weather.  Most of us agreed with him.

We have had weather more typical of winter than spring.  The first week we had days in the 50s, but the rest of the time we have had 30s and 40s and rain and snow.

Our data confirms our predictions.

Snow at Terrace Park...but not for long

When I woke up this morning, it was snowing.  I knew it wouldn't last because I could hear it melting off the roof.  Here is what our playground looked like at about 11:00 this morning.

It is currently 38 degrees.  More snow is expected tonight.

Average Temperatures and Graphing

Each week, usually on a Wednesday, we add up the temperatures for that week and divide by the number of days to find the average temperature for the week.

Next we put the average temperature for the week on a bar graph.  As you can see, we are experiencing typical winter weather in the Seattle area this year.

Snow, but not at Terrace Park

Yesterday, Mr. Bauer and I took a trip across the state to a city called Yakima in Eastern Washington.  For those of you not familiar with Washington State, there is a mountain range called the Cascade Mountains that separates Eastern Washington with Western Washington.  Western Washington's winter weather is typically in the 40s and rainy.  Eastern Washington always has more snow in the winter, because it is colder.

(I tried to get a picture of some of the tallest peaks in the Cascades for our NJ weather friends, but it was snowing too hard.  In your online research, look for Mt. Adams, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Stuart.  Each of these mountains are tall enough that they have snow year round.)

This is a picture of the area around Ellensburg, Washington.  As you can see from the picture, there aren't many tall fir trees like there are in Western Washington.  On the hill where I am standing, there is lots of sagebrush and it is dry most of the year.

It's not snowing here, but in about an hour my husband and I will drive into the Cascade Mountains where it is snowing.

Six More Weeks of Winter

When he saw his shadow this morning, Punxsutawny Phil predicts six more weeks of winter. Read a National Geographic article about Groundhog Day.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, we have a local event called Ground Frog Day.  The bullfrog Snohomish Slew also predicted six more weeks of winter weather.
